  2. The letters represent a catalog listing for the galaxy. The numbers afterwards indicate the galaxy's entry into the catalog and are most times related to where they are in the sky. Thanks for asking!

  8. Rhett- The closest galaxy like our own is called "Andromeda" and it is 2.2 million light years away.
    Kennedy- There are several billion galaxies known.
